Quick run to Alaska

We were too disorganized to plan much this summer, so just made a quick run to the Kenai Peninsula around the labor day weekend. Familiar territory meant no need for planning, stress-free trip and pictures of creatures.

Memories of summer!

Fall in Seattle is unbroken gloom. Good time to organize pictures from summer trips. We didn't make it out to the mountains as much as usual this year, but there were a couple of nice backpacking trips east of Glacier Peak. Spider Meadow and Buck Creek/Flower Dome are nice meadows for visiting in August, with nice views of Glacier Peak to the west if you walk up high enough.

Maui

Maui is a great vacation, although I imagine one might prefer a quieter island like Kauai for a second visit. The trick is to have a stay long enough that some of it you have no specific plans for, and to spend a bunch of time in or around water and generally lose track of what day it is today. That I find is a very good state to be in.

Snorkeling

The snorkeling in Maui is quite good, even if you are a novice like me. It is also a great way to maximize your water time. But more than anything else, photographing fish is a lot of fun. I bought a waterproof case for the little digital camera for this trip, and it turned out to be a good idea. There are also some video clips, and I guess I need to post them on youtube or something one of these days.

Not to be missed is a trip (or three) to Molokini crater. Fish heaven. On the island, I found that Ahihi Bay is best.
